Tim Clorius intersects personal interests and perspectives with political, social and environmental concerns into what he calls “Constructed Realities”. Painted scenarios, in which a stage-like, surreal scene unfolds that is carefully created to present a condensed and oftentimes humorous image of a specific event or situation. His paintings draw the viewer in trough a familiarity with the classical painting style and a conventional aesthetic beauty to then reveal their oftentimes critical undercurrents. He commonly gives his depictions a vintage look to insinuate them to be predictions about contemporary issues from the past. The title “conversation pieces” refers to the 18th century British genre of painting by the same name, which focused on informal group portraits and scenes of daily life.
